Drosera capensis
Miniature
Everything about a cape sundew, just smaller. Where a typical D. capensis can reach 15 cm across and develop leggy stems over time, the miniature form stays compact: tight rosettes a few centimetres across that keep their shape without sprawling. Several mini forms circulate in the trade under names like "Mini Red," "Minor," and "Compact Rosette." They likely represent independent selections from across the species' range, possibly including high-altitude populations where harsher conditions favour a more compact habit.
D. capensis grows across the Western Cape of South Africa, from sea level to around 1200 m, in marshes, stream banks, and seepage sites. One reference ties the smallest forms to plants found above the snow line, suggesting that reduced size may reflect adaptation to exposed, high-elevation conditions.
All the typical capensis features in miniature: strap-shaped leaves with red tentacles and dew, pink flowers on proportionally shorter scapes. Keeps a neat, dense rosette without the stem elongation that larger forms develop with age. Well suited to terrariums and small growing spaces.
